Our city’s name originated from a battle that never happened. In 1855, soldiers that were stationed at Fort Vancouver were going to battle with Indian Chief Umtuch, who was fleeing to the Cascade mountain range to the east. Captain William Strong and his regiment chased the Indians to what is now called Battle Ground. After having long negotiations, the Indians agreed to return to their nearby encampment, although somehow Chief Umtuch was killed, which still remains a mystery with different versions from eyewitnesses. After burying their Indian chief, they returned to their original encampment. From then on, the area began being called Strong’s Battle Ground.
