Yacolt Washington is a rural town north of Battle Ground, Washington, and comes from the Klickitat Indian word “yahkohti” which means haunted place or place of spirits.

At one time, Yacolt, Washington, was also known as the Valley of Lost Children. In September 1902, the town almost completely burned down in what has become called the Yacolt Burn. At that time, there were only 15 buildings, and they were almost completely destroyed by what is still one of the largest fires in the state of Washington.

Yacolt was rebuilt and then became officially incorporated in 1908 on July 31st.  Yacolt remains a very rural area with no major highways anywhere around.

I have lived near Yacolt in Battle Ground for decades, and my kids used to swim at nearby Moulton Falls State Park when they were young.
